Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO)

Regional Mathematics Olympiad or RMO is a mathematics talent search examination conducted by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBSCE). The descriptive examination includes a total of 6 questions which the students must solve in 3 hours.

The first stage of the examination is known as the Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad (PRMO). The students clearing the first stage are qualified for other stages.

Stages of Examination

Stage 1- Pre-Regional Mathematics Olympiad

The PRMO is conducted for 3 hours with 30 questions.

Stage 2- Regional Mathematics Olympiad

The students clearing stage 1 are qualified for RMO. The examination includes 6 questions which the students must answer in 3 hours.

Stage 3- Indian National Mathematics Olympiad

The best performers in RMO are selected for stage 3.

Stage 4- International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp

The best performers in stage 3 (around 35) are invited for mathematical training. A team of 6 students is selected for the next round.

Stage 5- Pre-Departure Camp

The selected students go under exhaustive training at HBCSE for 8-10 days.

Stage 6- International Mathematical Olympiad

The selected and trained students represent India in IMO.

For RMO, the students get 30 questions and 3 hours. The questions are both subjective and descriptive. It is also important to note that the scores for all questions are different. Thus, there is no fixed limit for each correct answer. Unlike other examinations, RMO is an offline exam.
